Check to make sure you didn't accidentally disable the touchpad (There's a button on the upper right of the touchpad). Turned out for the issue with the recovery DVD's there was a bug in the eRecover for those using 64bit OS's. Acer sent me the update patch for the software. The link doesn't appear to be active anymore, so if you have that issue, I'd email their tech support for an updated link. Hope that helps. I also updated my touchpad drivers from Acer's website. It's using Synaptics Pointing Device, not Elan Smartpad. Not sure if that will help.

Jay,

Are you having the same problem? If yes, I had the same issue. What worked for me was the following:load Recovery Disk 1 (of 2), let it run and be patient. It will automatically eject, then, put in the Drivers/Utility CD. Now, this will run for a long time, reboot like 7 times and then do a shudown. Power on the laptop using the left side power button (not the right). From the quick boot option, go into the O/S. That worked like a charm for me.

I have a problem as well, my touchpad will not work. If I plug in a mouse, no problem (I can manipulate the cursor etc). I notice in the bottom right task bar, the Elan Smartpad Icon has a red circle in it. This was not the case when the touchpad worked. I'm not sure how to get around this. A reboot did not work.

Any ideas?

Thanks.

Interesting, Acer timeline models seem to have similar problems. I'm actually prepping my pc with all my aps and settings, then burning a recovery DVDs with the current state, that way if I do have to recover, I'm not wasting time re-installing and re-activating software. Just another idea. To answer the question, no I'm still waiting to hear from tech support to see if they have a way to create the recovery DVD's, They of course have a paid option, but I'd rather have them supply them at no charge or fix the issue. I need to followup it's been over 2 weeks now.

Howdy!

Just bought the U81 at BestBuy and can't get the AIRecovery DVD program, which runs each boot to write the recovery DVDs it's nagging me about making. Has anyone had luck with it? It runs for a while then pops up 'Failed to make ISO disc'.

Nice! One of the Best Buy reviews, or rather the only one as of this typing, says that the U81A has no backlit keyboard. That's pretty disappointing if true. I'll wait for the true U80V.
